Held a Health Talk for Members; SWIT Osun Chapter

On Thursday, August 31, 2023, SWIT Osun held a health talk for members. The program that was held at Union Baptist Church Hall, Odi Olowo Osogbo was well attended. The resource person who handled the health talk was Dr. Babatunde Adeola Afolabi the CEO of Emmanuel Medical Centre, Osogbo who spoke on the topic “Overcoming The Scourge Of Depression And Diabetes In The
Society”.

He started his presentation by diving into the meaning of depression as a Common mental disorder that presents with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration.

He explained further the causes of depression, factors leading to depression, and solutions to depression. He explained that 70% of women are more likely to experience depression than men due to the fragility of women, trouble from children, husbands, workplaces, inlaws, and emotional trauma surrounding women. He then analysed the meaning of DIABETES as a group of metabolic disorders characterised by abnormal metabolism, which results most notably in hyperglycemia due to defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both.

He explained the risk factors of diabetes and the correlation between diabetes and depression. He mentioned classes of diabetes, a few preventive measures, and care for diabetes. He emphasised the symptoms of diabetes and implored us all, who see any of the symptoms, should head to the hospital immediately.

He concluded by mentioning that early disease detection is a step to cure. Delay may be dangerous.
